Job Description

Career Services Specialist


The purpose of the Career Services Specialist is to develop a comprehensive career services program to support students and alumni by initiating and maintaining relationships with local, regional, and national businesses and alumni to facilitate internship opportunities.  In addition, this position holder will be responsible for presenting career-related educational workshops, maintaining and updating Handshake, planning and implementing job fairs, partnering with campus offices to offer on campus internships, and assisting with HYPE Career Ready® events. 

Reports directly to the Executive Director of HYPE Career Ready® and Placement Services and receives peripheral and direct supervision from the Assistant VP for Alumni Engagement and HYPE Career Ready®.



Support student placement (career and internship) programs and activities by working collaboratively with alumni and businesses to identify potential sites for students; advertising employment and internship positions, and educating them on the employment processes;

Plans, coordinates and hosts job and internship fairs;

Hosts Career Workshops and HYPE sessions on interviewing techniques, resume-writing, cover letters and other job search skills training;

Reviews resumes, cover letters, references, job search related documents and assists students with interview preparation;

Maintains Handshake and sends out weekly emails on newly available internships and job opportunities;

Partners with campus offices to determine on-campus internship experiences for students;

Provides programmatic oversight for HYPE Career Ready® Days and Common Experiences, taking lead role for the Third Year Etiquette Networking Dinner; 

Assists in the implementation and reporting requirements of relevant grants, analyzes data, and prepares reports on internship and graduate employment information;

 Maintain relationships with the students, faculty, alumni and local businesses on behalf of HYPE Career Ready® & Placement, including serving on assigned Committees and creating partnerships;  

Other responsibilities as assigned by the Executive Director of HYPE Career Ready® & Placement Services and the Assistant VP for Alumni Engagement and HYPE Career Ready®. 


TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED: Knowledge of operation and use of various office equipment including, but not limited to: personal computer, including spreadsheet and word processing software, integrated database software, fax machine, copier, telephone, scanner, and printers.

Job Requirements


(A) Bachelor’s degree in human resources, social service, education, or related field; 

(B) Three (3) to five (5) years progressively responsible experience in human resources, career counseling, or administrative support role;

(C) An equivalent combination of education and / or relevant experience.


Preferred Experience

(A) Master’s degree; 

(B) Experience in a higher education setting. 


Supplemental Information

Necessary Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: 

∙ Practical knowledge of student development and career placement theory and practice;

∙ Outstanding oral and written communication skills and ability to present before large groups; 

∙ Proficiency with various computer applications including word-processing, spreadsheets, presentation software and graphics, specifically working knowledge of Handshake and G Suite applications; 

∙ Ability to work both independently as well as cooperatively in a team setting;

∙ Ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities and adhere to strict deadlines; 

∙ Ability to interact professionally and effectively with staff and all offices across campus;

∙ Ability to travel as needed or required, work evenings and/or weekends as needed.
