Job Summary

We are seeking an energetic and dynamic Community Engagement Coordinator.

The Wood County Board of Developmental Disabilities (WCBDD) coordinates services for over 1,000 people with developmental disabilities in Wood County. Our mission is to support, empower, and inspire all people. The ideal candidate will be a highly self-motivated problem solver, flexible, detailed oriented and is a team player with time management and organizational skills. who is a team player with time management and leadership skills. 

The Community Engagement Coordinator will assist the Superintendent in the implementation of the organization’s mission, vision and values.


Job Responsibilities

This position reports directly to the Superintendent and serves as a member of the leadership team.

This position works closely with internal and external stakeholders to advance the agency mission. 

Works with the leadership team and Superintendent to develop and implement cohesive communication, which includes, but is not limited to: new and existing initiatives, public programs, organizational culture, agency diversity, communication and branding. 

Generates partnerships to help drive community outreach and communicates these efforts to internal and external constituents.

Plan, manage and implement day-to-day public and community relations activities:

  • Public education and awareness activities
  • Community tours
  • News releases and news articles
  • Public speaking engagements
  • Media relations
  • Marketing
  • Agency Events


    Design, write, produce and implement external communication pieces: (Including but not limited to:)

  • Wood County Board of Developmental Disabilities (WCBDD) and/or Wood Lane publications
  • Annual reports
  • Program brochures
  • Displays


    Design, write, produce and implement internal communication pieces in collaboration with Board leadership:

  • Special projects, plans and proposals
  • Internal messaging to staff
  • Assist with Board Agenda as applicable
  • Develop presentations as requested


Provide oversight, management, development and implementation of DD system education.

Provide oversight, management, development and implementation of family support groups.


Provide direct supervision to the positions held of the Recreation Wellness Manager and Community Engagement Specialists.

Provide management and oversight of the Recreation Program including Special Olympics.

Manage and oversight of social media, website, intranet, and internal monitors.

Organize and maintain historical records.

Development and implementation of communication policies and procedures.

Ensure webpage is up to date and current.

Collaborate, consult and maintain effective communication with other agency coordinators and administration.

Implementation of strategic plan goals and objectives.

Development of communications reports.

Oversees community partnerships and assist in key stakeholder engagement, including working closely with the Superintendent on government affairs.

Acts as a primary liaison in community engagement initiatives.

Oversight of Community In Partnership Committee.

Consults on programs and projects as assigned.

Keeps up to date on regulatory and policy developments related to staff and volunteer diversity and inclusion matters and stays abreast of best practices and trends in the field.

Conditions of Employment

  1. Must be 18 years old.
  2. Successful completion of general orientation.
  3. Receipt of seven acceptable background required by ORC 3319.39 & OAC 5123:2-2-02.
  4. Must obtain and maintain any training, licenses, registration, or certification mandated by the Board and the State of Ohio.
  5. Must have a medical examination and a one-step PPD test to determine fitness for duty prior to providing direct care service or within 30 days of employment whichever comes first.
  6. Possess/maintain an acceptable motor vehicle record (if required for position) per board guidelines. NOTE: Use of personal vehicle for transporting individuals requires proof of liability insurance.
  7. Receipt of acceptable criminal background report from Bureau of Criminal Identification (BCI) and county sheriff ‘s office of permanent address before starting position as required by ORC 3319.39 and/or OAC 5123.081. OAC 5123:2-2-02.

Minimum Qualifications

Education/Experience Requirements

Must have a Bachelor’s Degree in Marketing, Public Relations, Organizational Development, Communications, Human Resources or closely related field.  

Must have two (2) years’ experience of demonstrated leadership, in any of the above, with primary responsibility for directing or leading an effective specific purpose committee or function of the Board. 

Two (2) years related experience working with individuals with developmental disabilities preferred, as applicable to position.

Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, Publisher, PowerPoint, and Outlook is required. 

Experience in Photoshop and web page design is preferred. 

Must be able to operate audio-visual equipment.

Must have knowledge of communication and demonstration techniques.  Be able to communicate with ease on a professional level.  Be able to make a persuasive, clear presentation of ideas or facts, given time for preparation. 

Must have effective expression in individual or group situations including gestures and nonverbal communication.  Be able to identify and motivate various audiences and effectively communicate in technical and lay language.  Be able to answer telephone inquiries effectively and have experience in television and radio presentation.

Must be able to recognize media needs (radio, television, magazine, newspapers, e-commerce).  Will understand available communications channels and techniques.  Be able to understand layout, design, photography and other art-related subjects.  Be able to understand mass communications. 

Must have the ability to write press releases, television, or newspaper interviews.

Must be able to relate public relations functions to the total marketing program and evaluate the results.

Minimum Qualification Standards:

Must be able to move individuals who are receiving services including adults and children in a safe manner. Must be able to lift, carry and move office supplies, materials, and equipment required for day-to-day operations.

If required by the position you must maintain a current driver’s license in your residing state for the purpose of transporting individuals who are receiving services and/or operation of a Board owned vehicle.
