SUMMARY:  The purpose of this position is to be responsible for the overall direction, guidance and management of Mennel Milling’s flour milling division and personnel. This position is ultimately responsible for establishing the direction and standards for all milling locations in order to achieve operational excellence in all facets of the business. This position will sustain the Mission and Motto and Food Safety and Quality Statement of the Mennel Milling Company. 

PRIMARY WORK SHIFT: Monday – Friday 8AM – 5PM. Works shift as assigned and overtime as required.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily with or without accommodation.

  • Follow all food and personal safety rules and regulations in respect to GMP’s, OSHA, HACCP, the Global Food Safety Initiative, the US FDA Food Safety Modernization Act as stated in the FS&Q Statement, and sanitation guidelines as set forth by the company as listed in Corporate Health, Safety & Environmental (HSE) and attend all required training sessions. Maintain the department/facility in an everyday audit ready condition.
  • Provide organizational leadership in a dynamic and collaborative environment.
  • The Director of Milling will be an active member of Mennel’s corporate leadership team; responsible for setting the strategies and goals for the company’s core milling operations.
  • This position will be responsible for executing the strategic and tactical plans as established with the VP of Operations.  Must foster a collaborative working relationship with the entire operations team in order to achieve these plans.
  • Provide the overall business and technical leadership necessary to ensure that the flour milling division meets and/or exceed goals in all key performance areas of Cost, Quality, Sanitation, System Performance, Customer Service, & EHS.
  • This position will be a champion for continuous improvement and will implement successful strategies to achieve overall operational excellence.
  • This position will lead, motivate, and develop managers, supervisors and hourly employees to achieve outstanding manufacturing performance results, while leveraging Continuous Improvement tools, improving individual skill sets, and enhancing teamwork.
  • Must foster a “zero” EHS culture and mentality throughout the company and strive for world-class safety performance by ensuring that Mennel’s milling facilities and finished products meet and/or exceed the company and government standards of quality, sanitation and safety.
  • The Director of Milling will take a leadership role in the planning, development, execution, and management of various capital projects across all flour mill locations, both large and small in scope and cost.
  • This position will be required to assemble and direct cross-functional project teams and successfully interact and communicate with all levels in the organization, both in the field and in the office.
  • Must be a developer of talent to ensure future business success and growth within our human resources.
  • This position must successfully collaborate with, and effectively motivate and influence, plant personnel, including plant managers and supervisors, to ensure operational excellence is achieved in all key metrics.
  • Uses the Mennel Corporate Mission, Quality, and Safety Statements as guiding principles in the decision-making process.
  • Directs and coordinates operations in accordance with established company policies and procedures.
  • Acts as a resource for members of the entire Operations team.
  • Required to communicate frequently with the VP – Operations and be aligned with the overall goals and objectives of the Operations Group.
  • Other duties may be assigned.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: This position will supervise all Flour Mill Plant Managers


Job Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS: The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required to perform this job.

  • Bachelor of Science degree in flour milling or related food manufacturing field is required.
  • 10-15 years of progressive plant management experience in flour milling or food manufacturing environment is required.
  • Strong leadership skill, including the ability to implement change, influence business strategies, guide and direct others, and resolve conflict are critical skills required of this position.
  • Excellent technical writing, speaking, and presentation skills.
  • Thoroughly understands the business in which we operate and knows how the inputs and outputs affect the end results.
  • Must have solid communication skills and be able to interact and productively communicate with all levels of the organization.
  • Must approach role as a business owner.
  • Ability to develop and lead strategic initiatives as well as plan the specific tactics to achieve the strategic vision.
  • Ability to develop and coach others.
  • Ability to adjust to multiple demands, shifting work priorities, ambiguity, adversity and change.
  • Must possess the ability to learn new skills and assume new responsibilities.
  • Must be self-motivated, have initiative, and be able to effectively work independently.

  • Ability to travel 25-40%

LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, memos, procedures, and plans. Ability to write, complete checklists and other basic documentation and correspondence. Ability to effectively present information or data in one-on-one and small group situations to co-workers, supervisors, and managers.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.

REASONING ABILITY: Must use solid judgment when making decisions. Must have ability to quickly recognize and plan for changing work duties and events.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; use hands to perform maintenance tasks, reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, twist, crouch, or crawl, and talk or hear. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds or more. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to conditions that are typical to a fast- paced manufacturing environment, including: moving equipment and machinery, dusty, hot/humid, and cold conditions; employee must be willing to work in all weather conditions, at heights, and in the presence of airborne particles. The noise level in the work environment usually requires the use of hearing protection. Work involves exposure to common wheat allergens.
