Job Description


The primary purpose of the Infection Preventionist is to plan, organize, develop, coordinate and direct our Infection Control Program and its’ activities in accordance with current Federal, State and Local standards, guidelines and regulations that govern such programs and as may be directed by the Director of Corporate Quality and Safety and the Infection Control Committee to ensure the highest degree of quality care is maintained.

This position evaluates quality of patient care and patient outcomes as they relate to healthcare-associated infections; collects, prepares and analyzes healthcare-associated infection data: presents infection data and makes recommendations for actions; monitors employee compliance in use of barriers and infection prevention measures; prepares and presents educational offerings for the staff; serves as a resource to all departments and personnel; implements programs to protect healthcare workers, visitors, and others in the healthcare environment; sets and recommends policies and procedures to prevent adverse events; provides internal and external reporting of information and data; promotes compliance with regulations, guidelines, and accreditation requirements. Reports to Director of Corporate Quality and Safety.


Duty 1: Performs continuous monitoring of hospital-acquired infections to help control and prevent the spread of infection. Performs on-going monitoring of healthcare-associated infections.

Duty 2: Conducts outbreak investigation (as needed), initiates control measures and reports communicable diseases to the state as required by law, to aid in public health epidemiology and safety.

Duty 3: Assesses infection control issues and makes recommendations for corrective action, as necessary, to reduce infection rate.

Duty 4: Assists in preparation for meetings of the Infection Control Committee: – Prepares agendas – Prepares packets for distribution

Duty 5: Writes, revises, reviews, and implements infection control policies and procedures throughout the organization, with the Infection Control Committee, to ensure continuity in the prevention and control of infection across the organization.

Duty 6: Monitors infection control practices and employee compliance on a monthly basis. Works with employee health to initiate follow-up on each associate (patient, volunteers, students, visitors, Licensed Independent Practitioners) exposed to communicable disease, to help ensure safety for all.

Duty 7: Develops an annual surveillance plan based on the population(s) served, services provided, and analysis of surveillance data.

* Utilize epidemiologic principles to conduct surveillance and investigations.

* Evaluate and modify the surveillance plan as necessary.

Duty 8: Participates in infection control performance improvement activities throughout Blanchard Valley Health System as necessary.

Duty 9: Keeps informed of new and revised guidelines, regulations, laws, and issues pertaining to Infection Control and Prevention on an ongoing basis in order to serve as a resource for all departments and personnel, to help prevent and control infections.

Duty 10: Provides educational offerings for monthly orientation and on-going in-services. Consults with department heads and physicians as needed to improve care.

Duty 11: Participates in Process Improvement/Quality projects utilizing process improvement methodology as a means of enacting change.
