The City of Bowling Green is accepting applications from February 1, 2021 through March 31, 2021 for the classification of Police Officer. Candidates must take and pass a written examination through the National Testing Network (NTN) and a physical ability test through the City prior to the deadline in order to be eligible for consideration for hire. Candidates are responsible for registering for the NTN examination prior to the deadline and for paying any associated fees/costs. Link to NTN: www.nationaltestingnetwork.com. All new Police Officers serve a one-year probationary period. The current pay scale is $26.97 to $33.94/hour. Starting base hourly rate is $26.97, as outlined in the OPBA contract. Certified officers, possessing full-time law enforcement experience, will be evaluated for a possible increase in the starting salary. An Associate Degree or the completion of at least 96 quarter hours or 64 semester hours toward a Bachelor’s Degree, is required. Proof of education is required at the time of application. The post-secondary education must be obtained from an accredited college or university. (Hours must be eligible for transfer to Bowling Green State University.)
In accordance with Section 124.41 of the Ohio Revised Code (ORC) and City Ordinance, no person shall be eligible to receive an original appointment as a police officer, unless the person has reached the age of twenty-one (21) and has not yet reached the age of thirty-five (35). (The age restriction is permitted by the Public Safety Exemption to the Age Discrimination in Employment Act (29 U.S. Code 623 (j)).
The City’s Charter provides for an additional credit of 10% of a passing test score for honorably discharged veterans. A candidate’s Form DD-214 denoting an honorable discharge must be submitted at the time of application in order to be eligible for the veteran’s credit.
